| Hello, I purchase two SmartPhones and installed List Manager on both of them. I added two usesr and provided each mobile phone number as displayed on the device screen and the matching password I chose on the device.
However, despite having both phones setup as Users, I am unable to Notify them of new items. When I click the button I get the message:
"Unwired List Manager was unable to send the requested notification message. One or more of the mobile devices requiring notification has not registered a mobile carrier with the Unwired Web Service"
For both devices I chose "Other" since one is Sprint/Nextel and the other is Cingular/AT&T.
What gives? Both devices are able to pull from the desktop by initiating a sync, so the connection appears to be working. Why then am I unable to push down from the desktop?

| | JP, On the registration screen, select 'Mobile E-Mail' as your carrier. When you select this option and press Register, you will be prompted to enter the email address that is used to send your phone a text message (SMS). This likely takes the form 5558881234@yourcarrier.com. The mobile device notification uses SMS to alert the device. List Manager on your device will receive SMS messages coming from List Manager (desktop) and - depending on your setttings - will either prompt you (on your device) to initiate a sync, or automatically initiate a sync for you.

| That makes me kind of angry...why does Unwired specifically recommend a SmartPhone with an "unlimited data plan" if the system only uses SMS? Carriers charge for text messaging separately than data (a very unhealthy $0.15 each, incoming and outgoing).
I assumed your company had some kind of "gateway" server that my SmartPhone device was connecting to by IP or address so that the gateway could shuttle encrypted data between my devices. Granted, I can get an unlimited SMS plan but that seems ridiculous that I would have to spend an extra $15/mo and waste the perfectly good, free Internet connection.
Is this something that's going to change very soon? Or will unwired always be SMS based for Sprint/Nextel or AT&T/Cingular?
Thanks,
JP

| | JP, SMS is ONLY used for sending device notifications. All syncing is done - as you describe - via HTTP. SMS is absolutely NOT required, but does added some extended functionality. JamesP (5/17/2007)

This is indeed how our software functions.

| Given that I have an unlimited data plan...why doesn't my phone maintain a continuous connection with your gateway server? Or why not use Microsoft's built-in "Push email" technology (ie Blackberry knock-off)? Or why isn't there a simple "Check for updates every X minutes" option?
If I understand correctly, my choice right now is either a) manually sync, which my Boss will never remember to do and be unaware when I have added a critical item or b) use immediate SMS notification but have to pay pay carrier SMS rates?
This seems to defeat the whole purpose of the program! I can already send an SMS to my boss's phone to provide immediate notification, and I can already use access Outlook for Web or any other web-based tasklist via the built-in browser.
Based on the information from your website, I was honestly expecting something more like a client/server application where I might literally be able to prop the phone up on my desk and watch people checking off items as the day progresses.

Good questions: We designed the system to utilize an on demand connection for a number of reasons, a couple of which I will share here. First, not all of our customers have unlimited data plans, so keeping a connection live would get expensive for some. A second reason is that in terms of battery life, keeping a live connection to our server would be rather expensive. We could utilize polling, but that too can do a number on battery life. Making polling a user configurable option is an interesting idea. Anyone else want to way in on this? Microsoft's "push email" functionality requires one to be utilizing Exchange Server. Although we do plan to work with Exchange Server in the future, one of our primary design goals was to be a low cost solution/alternative that does not require any additional hardware/software. If I understand correctly, my choice right now is either a) manually sync, which my Boss will never remember to do and be unaware when I have added a critical item or b) use immediate SMS notification but have to pay pay carrier SMS rates?
For now, that is correct. We are looking into additional mechanisms for triggering AutoSync that do not require SMS.

The current version of List Manager can be configured to work exactly as you describe above. The current version of List Manager does utilize SMS to provide this extended functionality. Basic synchronization does not require nor utilize SMS; however, device notification and thus AutoSync to mobile devices does. We are very aware of the costs associated with SMS (for some) and will continue to look for ways to make our products more cost effective.
